Then each began to dig trenches, which moved or changed little until 1918, despite huge, bloody battles in which hundreds of thousands died for a few miles of shell-blasted territory. By 1918 the Russians had quit the war and the US had declared war against Germany. The US was still building its army and sending men to France but did not have a huge army yet in France when 1918 began. The Germans knew they had to win the war before the Americans arrived in large numbers. The Germans were able to move large numbers of troops from the eastern front to the west, with Russia out of the war, and began their win-the-war offensives in March, 1918.
