How to get a tape out of a vcr?

Remove the power cord from the wall for the VCR. Remove the top cover. The tape goes through guide rollers and around guide pins, around the Video head, over the audio head and a capstan rubber roller and again through pins and rollers. You need to carefully remove the tension of the tape to get some slack and gently pull the tape in an upward motion to clear the rollers and guide pins through out the tape path. The tape will probably be ruined but it can still be salvaged to some extent. While you have the unit open, get some Q-Tips and 90% rubbing alcohol and clean all the pin, rollers and Audio head. Clean the rubber capstan roller. Clean it until the Q-Tips are reasonably white. You need a can of Video Head cleaner to spray the video head itself by rotating it manually as you spray. Radio shack has them. Good Luck. Oh, one final note, verify that you leave no Q-Tip fibers behind on any of the items you clean.

If you got the top off and can see the tape and nothing is over it. Just grab the sides and pull straight up. the tape maybe ruined cause if the gears at the tape its self it might be crinkled and wont play right. Sorry. LOL Also another thing that works is opening the door and pushing the tape back and down and jiggling it around hitting eject. Sometimes that works.

If you value the VCR, don’t try tugging it out yourself. The best way is for a shop to manually back the gearing off to release the tension on the tape. It is likely not usable again, btw. Just don’t start pulling things!!! Oh, it likely has slack belts… may need some repair.
