It depends on your circumstances.If it’s a survival type situation you can dig a hole and but a bucket in it, then put water outside the bucket and cover the hole with plastic and put a rock in the middle over the bucket. The dirty water will evaporate and condense on the plastic and slide down the plastic and drip into the bucket. Not the best tasting stuff but clean enough. The Navy gave pilots a device that worked on this idea so they could drink fresh water if shot down over the ocean in WWII If you’re camping and can plan ahead you can buy a filtration pump at most any camping store or boil the water, depending on the nature of the pollution. If its just down stream form the sewer either way you’ll probably be ok if your down stream from nuclear waste either go thirsty or accept that you’ll glow in the dark.
