Good. Look at the soil. Is it mossy, fungus-ridden or are there whitish buildups of mineral salts? Avoid. Does the root system of the plant appear strong and deep? Good. If the greenhouse you purchase your plants from keeps the low light and strong light plants in the same area, you will have to carefully adjust the low light plants to your home. Avoid. Look closely at the leaves and soil of your plant for disease and insects. Avoid at all costs. Insects and diseases can often be remedied, but your best weapon against them is to avoid introducing them into your home. You can greatly reduce infestations by cleaning dead leaves and husks off plants, and removing dead leaves from inside pots. These are the places that insects lay their eggs, and fungal infections start. Also, remove any damaged leaves and stems from plants for the same reason.
