How was peritonitis (infection in abdominal cavity) treated in the late 1800s?
Back then, the most common cause of peritonitis was ruptured appendicitis. People would die from stuff like that. Many causes of peritonitis nowadays include perforated bowel from diverticular disease, cancers, bowel strangulation, etc. These conditions generally occur in older people, which wasn’t as big an issue back then cause not many people lived to that age.
