They were generally used in an indirect fire role to bombard enemy positions and troop concentrations. These bombardments could be conducted on a regular, scheduled basis, whereby at a certain time each day the guns fired at a given area for a set amount of time, or until having expended a set amount of shells.Alternatively, the guns could fire for a much longer period as part of a heavy artillery barrage that preceded an assault on the enemy lines. Sometimes, the fire was directed onto targets by observers in aircraft or positioned in baskets held aloft by balloons, particularly when artillery was being used in a defensive role. more
