How Were Native Americans Treated In The Thirteen Colonies In The 1600s?
Answer Syndney, Good question, but a little too broad to answer with any certainty. Generally, the Native Americans were treated quite well by the first Euroamericans to arrive in North America. They knew the land, the animals and plants, the weather, etc. and so were heavily relied upon by the first colonizers for information and essential knowledge. It was not until later, as the colonizers began to build towns and claim land that they began to treat the Native Americans with little respect. A new book on the southern New England Native Americans called “A Cultural History of the Native Peoples of Southern New England” by Moondancer and Strong Woman (to Natives) discusses quite well the early impressions colonizers had concerning Native Americans.
