HOW WERE OTHER SIMULTANEOUS MOVEMENTS AFFECTED BY GRUNGE?
• Riot grrrl, one of the most prominent movements simultaneous to grunge, was in part a reaction to grunge. However, the indie labels that riot grrrls distributed their music on were often affiliated with grunge or punk in some way. The riot grrrl movement was also a direct descendent from punk rock in the way that they used the entire independent world— zines, record labels, and art alike—to achieve an entire culture based on a movement. • Although grunge largely overshadowed almost all other music movements during the time, there were alternatives that affected successive musical styles, most importantly the slacker rock established by Pavement. • Britpop was affected in an oblique way by grunge, partly because it was a reaction to the grunge movement. Although Britain was being overrun by flannel-wearing grunge musicians, Britpop artists like Suede, Oasis, Blur, and Pulp tried to resurrect the three-minute single in a more traditional sense than grunge.
