They were different because they lived in different areas; the Mound Builders lived in the east, with forests and fertile soil. The Anasazi lived in the deserts where they had to use irrigation for their crops. What led the Mayas to excel in basket weaving, jewelry making, math and other sciences? They grew extra food, so that they didn’t have to spend all of their time trying to feed their families. They were also able to sell their extra food for items they needed.
