Most Africans brought to American, first as indentured servants and later as slaves, were forced to work under back-breaking conditions, long hours in the field of the deep south. Food was very poor and working conditions were harsh. Clothing and housing were also rather miserable. Of course, conditions for most poor free whites during the same period were not much better. Of course, the big difference was that whites had the freedom to move to another location or try another profession if they wanted. I hope this helps!
