How will Canadian Blood Services ensure that it is open, accessible and accountable to the public?
The Canadian Blood Services Board endorsed the principles of openness, accessibility and accountability to the public at its first meeting in April 1998. To encourage early and informed third-party participation in the blood supply system, Canadian Blood Services features a number of independent advisory committees (including a National Liaison Committee, a Scientific Advisory Committee and a Research and Development Committee). At its May 1998 meeting in Toronto, the Canadian Blood Services Board of Directors also agreed to make public the Canadian Blood Services Board of Directors meeting agendas, summary minutes of meetings and records of decisions. This will enable the advisory committees to help enhance the system’s safety. In addition, Canadian Blood Services operates a toll free number and an interactive web site to ensure that the public and interested parties are kept informed of activities affecting Canada’s blood system.
