How Will Core Standards Impact California’s Curriculum, Assessment and Accountability System and ESEA Reauthorization?
What makes this a unique process is the fact it’s a state led effort not a federal push. Therefore it does not tie directly to ESEA Reauthorization but it is on a parallel track. We do know Secretary Duncan supports California’s involvement particularly as a state with very high standards given the inequity in rigor between states via NCLB accountability. It is too early to tell how it may impact California’s accountability system. Clearly there will need to be a review of the proposed voluntary standards before California embarks on any changes to its current system and structures (e.g. curriculum, assessment, instructional materials and professional development). How Will ACSA Be Involved? ACSA will be proactive in this endeavor and will engage our councils, committees, advisory groups, delegate assembly and board of directors in this dialogue.
