How will GPs be encouraged to use electronic pathology messages? Has the Project considered the clinical risks associated with the switch to electronic pathology messaging?

GPs are increasingly recognising, experiencing and enjoying the benefits of receiving and integrating pathology test results into the electronic patient record. This and previous projects have produced information which is available to local communities to support communication and awareness campaigns. To support benefits realisation, local communities were required to conduct a pre-implementation survey and to then survey and record types of practice implementation initially secured. The latter information will form the basis of follow on local benefits realisation activity. With respect to clinical risk, much of the systems development work required from system suppliers was specifically aimed at securing clinically safe and robust implementations. A major project deliverable was professionally-approved guidance to support safe clinical practice, and this was backed up by training material developed in conjunction with professional representatives.
