Former Vice-President Al Gore lost the presidency to George W. Bush in a controversial election whose outcome was finally settled by the U.S. Supreme Court. In 2001 people wondered how Gore might behave toward the newly installed President, who did not have what could be called a mandate, and who took office with some saying that the election had been stolen. When it became known that Gore’s first public appearance following Bush’s inauguration was to be as a lecturer to a journalism class at Columbia University on February 10th, the media was all ears.
