How will it be decided how much gas tax money my community will receive?
Each province and territory, and First Nations, know how much gas tax funding will be allocated to them. How the gas tax money is distributed to communities may vary by province and territory based on local needs. A formula to allocate each province/territory’s share of the gas tax among communities is set out in their respective agreements. Agreements have been signed in 13 jurisdictions. These agreements will provide communities with stable, predictable, and long-term funding in a transparent and equitable manner. Agreements and priorities are different in each province or territory, which demonstrates the flexibility in meeting local needs through the cities and communities agenda. Allocation strategies are consistent with the Government of Canada’s principles of equity and transparency, and will benefit all communities, large and small.
