How will my refaced cabinets compare in quality to new cabinets?

We’ve found that the quality of production cabinetry available in the big box stores has deteriorated greatly over the past few years. In an effort to hit a price point, the cabinet sides, shelves and drawers are typically made of thin particle board covered with vinyl wood-grain photoprint paper. Drawer joints may be stapled instead of dovetailed and the hinges and drawer runners are usually inexpensive imports. Ironically, many homeowners that undertake a complete tearout and cabinet replacement end up with a lower quality cabinet than they discarded.
