Despite its high energy content, high-sulfur Illinois coal has been used much less over the last three decades because of tighter environmental standards. The resulting economic downturn hit communities in central and southern Illinois particularly hard. With IGCC technology, Illinois coal will become an environmentally viable, low-cost fuel source for the downstate economy.
