How will the private sector interact with the Federal government to advance the adoption of health IT?

Extensive progress has already been made in defining consensus-based interoperability standards that can be adopted by both public and private sector interests. The Federal government will continue to promote public-private partnerships for the development and harmonization of interoperability standards. These standards will be made publicly available as they are defined, allowing purchasers to incorporate them into their health plan and provider contract requirements. The Federal government will also be coordinating with the public-private partnerships that exist today across the country to advance the adoption of health information technology and the exchange of clinical data. Public-private partnerships will continue to be the vehicle to engage both sectors to advance the adoption of electronic health records and the health information exchange needed for quality measurement and reporting.
