SAN JOSE, Calif. – Tesla Motors Inc. plans to build a $250 million facility to manufacture a zero-emission luxury sedan in the heart of Silicon Valley. The nation’s leading all-electric car company will also relocate its corporate headquarters and research and development efforts to a consolidated campus in San Jose, Calif. Tesla President and CEO Ze’ev Drori announced Wednesday that construction on the 89-acre site would begin in the summer of 2009. When fully operational, the facility will employ approximately 1,000 workers. Tesla selected San Jose in part because the region already enjoys a high concentration of highly skilled engineers and support infrastructure. It was announced in a press release on June 30, 2008. The prototype vehicle was displayed at a press conference on March 26, 2009. It is expected to enter production by early to mid 2011 with a price of $57,400 ($49,900 after $7,500 federal tax credit) for the base model and acceleration of 0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds. The Model S will have a range of 160 miles (260 km), 230 miles (370 km) or 300 miles (480 km) when fully charged, depending on the chosen battery option, and feature a 45 minute QuickCharge when connected to a 480V outlet.
