A functionalist would view or see racial inequality for its functions. Racial inequality preserves social class order, through the maintenance of segregated geography or the racialization of geography, comes the separation of classes, and thus the fragmentation and marginalization of the political power of the lowest third of income earners. Another way that racial inequality preserves social class order is in the way that schools are funded by localities, so poor areas have poor schools that do not prepare them for the SAT. Third, racial inequality serves to provide the US Armed Forces with a steady supply of black and Hispanic people. Fourth, racial inequality gives majority group people who are fearful of the other the opportunity to dominate them via police measures; making majority group members feel better than others, and giving men with violent tendencies a socially permitted way to externalize these urges.
