Most jobs in the health care industry will still be there, except many in administration. Generally these people have business degrees and can expect to be absorbed elsewhere. (From 1970 through 1996 health administrators increased 20-fold while doctors increased only 2.5 times.) I would rather think of the jobs in commerce that will be more plentiful after health insurance stops destroying the bottom line. There will be no “cabooses and conductors on freight trains,” referring to the featherbedding of jobs in the past on railroads. Doctors, nurses and other support personnel—the backbone of the health care system—will always have work.
