All of the commonly used pain medications that women are given after cesareans are compatible with breastfeeding. If you have either spinal or epidural for your cesarean, it is likely you will also be given a dose of a drug called duramorph, which is a long-acting type of morphine that is administered directly with the anesthetic, and keeps most women comfortable for about 18-24 hrs. The advantage of duramorph is that it really does not circulate in your blood stream to any significant degree, hence most women are quite comfortable and awake for this time period. After the first day, you will be given pain pills (by mouth) that are safe to take while breastfeeding.
