I am having a hard time finding a trainer just to teach me to fly regularly. Is is still possibale to teach yourself aerobatics or will finding another instructor benefit me more?
I understand your plight. There are quite a few good aerobatic instructors around, but we live in a big country they don’t all live close by. According to a few of the “old time” airshow pilots, it is possible to teach yourself aerobatics. In fact, after your learn basic aerobatics you really have to teach yourself to get better and to move to the next step. That being said, I would never recommend trying things that are beyond your capabilities, or obviously beyond the capabilities of your aircraft. I think of it like this – if you know the limits of the aircraft you are flying, trying new maneuvers at a safe altitude with plenty of air beneath you is safe, but only if you have a solid understanding of and have had training in spins. So, I suggest you get a good ten hour course behind you, making sure you focus on getting out of unusual attitudes and spin training.
