Tier 1 of the PBS is the replacement for the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme and allows those who meet the required points score to enter the UK and work freely (except as a Doctor in Training). The candidates are independent and do not need any employer intervention in terms of sponsorship. Tier 1 visas are required for those candidates who wish to work in the UK but are not EEA citizens or have any restrictions on their stay in the UK. Those who qualify for Tier 1 are given 3 years to reside in the UK. Within this period they must become economically active. At the three year stage they can apply for a two year extension and then may qualify for permanent residence or temporary citizenship.
