The Breed Standard for the PRTA of Great Britian (the standard we at Dalwhinnie subscribe to) is online by clicking here. This standard represents a dog that is physically capable of following a pack of foxhounds and bolting fox – the job the dog was originally bred to do and continues to do to this day. It represents a balanced dog of 12 to 15 inches in height. This is frequently referred to as “the Parson type.” There are many other balanced dogs, standing from 10 to 12 inches in height, now called “Jack Russell Terriers.” The Russell Terrier is also now accepted as a breed by the UKC and several other kennel clubs around the world. These longer bodied, shorter terriers are not Jack Russell Terriers. You can visit the United Russell Terrier Club at www.russellterrier.com for more information on this breed.
