I want to change the last name on my babies birth certificate?
I’m in UK and split with my son’s father when he was 6 months old (we were not married). I wanted to change my son’s surname back to my maiden name and made an appointment to see a solicitor. I couldn’t change the birth certificate and had to do a Change of Name Deed. I didn’t pay anything at that time as I was receiving income support and it was quite a few years ago.I do know that if you are married or even divorced, you do have to have the father’s consent. It depends. You have a certain amount of time to edit the birth certificate after it is submitted, Depending on how old the baby is. If the father submits an affidavit of paternity you may get it changed for free at that point. If you want to change it any other way you will have to do it through the legal system.
