I want to transfer a car title into my name and the title never got transfered to the guy I bought it from?
Don’t get involved ! What was done here is called “jumping the title” mostly done to avoid sales tax and other fees. Jumping titles is illegal. The seller Must furnish the buyer with a merchantable title at the time of the sale and the buyer should never ever fork over a cent til he has that valid title in his hands. If you have already foolishly paid for this car, see if you can return it and get your money back…or insist that you be given a valid title.
White out? Absolutely not. It will void the title completely. The guy you bought the car from has to get the title in his name first. He has to pay the taxes on the vehicle. Then he can sell it to you. He is just trying to avoid paying taxes on the purchase price of the vehicle when he bought it. He can’t do that. And he can’t legally sell you something he doesn’t own! If you gave paid him for the vehicle, take the vehicle back and get your money back immediately. If you haven’t paid for it yet, don’t pay for it until you see he has a title in his name. Whiting out on a title will only complicate a complicated issue. A title is a legal document, and can NOT be altered in any way. White out, crossing out, erasing. Any alterations will void it completely. And in that case, the person’s name that is on the front of the title has to apply for a duplicate title.
