that practice has been adopted by all businesses for some time now... it is a bit frustrating ... however due to the unscrupulous acts of a few we all have to comply.... anyone can present a check even with proper ID... in most cases of identity theft the seemingly innocent party appears to be beyond reproach.... many business owners adopted this practice because of numerous "insufficient funds" checks being returned to them from people opening up new accounts... and getting goods without having the means to pay for them... and not being able to verify funds... some banking institutions will not verify funds over the phone like they used to. also... if you miss place a checkbook or lose it ... anyone can write what ever amount they want and clean out your bank account... it's store policy with most businesses to not accept a check without an imprinted name, address, etc... on it... nor do they accept out of state checks... two party checks... ( a check written to you by another person) ... more

I used to work at a grocery store. Most of those starter checks came back bouncing like rubber balls. Far more bounced starter checks than any other kind of checks. It's pretty easy to steal them (like I could just put my name on yours, and no one would ever know until it came back bad), or use old starter checks from a closed account. Especially large orders, like $180. Cash is marked "legal tender" because it is "good for all debts, public and private." Checks are not. (If you owed me money, personally, for example, and I thought your check was likely to be bad, I would not accept it. Businesses won't, either.) There are some businesses, like street cart hotdog vendors, that ONLY take cash. Stores that take credit cards, checks, first-born children and the like are doing so because it's convenient for you, and good customer service, but they don't have to.
