If a fellow/post-doc is going on paid maternity leave, could the award be placed in abeyance if no other staffs are employed on the award?

No because the fellow/post-doc is still being paid whilst on maternity leave and therefore payments to the research organisation need to be continued. However the award can be placed in abeyance whilst the research assistant/fellow is on unpaid maternity leave provided there is no one else employed on the project and research is being carried out during that time.
