If adults can choke and die on their own vomit while sleeping on their back then why dont babies?
They can that is why they say that babies with GERD should sleep on their tummy. I have had three of them with GERD so I know a lot about the disease. When my first child of SIDS that was one of the things the medical examiner checked since she was on her back when she died but normally was a tummy sleeper. I had her on her back because she was taking a nap and for naps I liked her that way so she would not sleep as long and she had just eaten before she went to sleep. They said her reflux had nothing to do with her passing after a complete autopsy but it is a concern. If they are on their backs and have a reflux episode tiny particles of food can be refluxed up their esophagous and go down their trachea causing them to have breathing problems or cesation of breathing. As far as the position of sleeping for babies this is the response I always give to people with that question.
