If dinosaurs became extinct due to meteor collision, how did other species survive?

Don’t forget that the dinosaurs were the largest species by far and changes would affect them much more than smaller species. They also think that at the time when the asteroid hit Earth the dinosaurs were already starting to decline possibly due to a cooling Earth and therefore less vegetation for food. They say at the time we were a tiny mammal and perhaps we could hide better and we did something right because this tiny mammal survived and we evolved from that tiny mammal 65 million years ago into what we have become today.
