If I am single and not married, how many withholdings should I claim on my W-4?
The official IRS.gov website has a very useful withholding calculator that helps you determine how many withholdings you should claim on your W-4 depending on your specific circumstance.
In the case of a single, unmarried individual with no dependents the calculator indicates that you should claim 0 or 1 withholdings. This is the norm for most unmarried singles on the W-4 form. Putting a 0 on the form will take out a little more in taxes per paycheck, but it will also increase the liklihood that you receive a tax refund this April versus having to write a supplementary paycheck to the government (to pay taxes you owe since you had too little taken out during the year).
