There are about 5 conferences that you could play in if you want to play D-1 but not against powerhouse schools. The conferences you should consider for D-1A (FBS) are: Conference USA Mid-American Conference (MAC) Mountain West Conference (MWC) Sun Belt Conference Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Most teams in these conferences do schedule at least one game against powerhouse schools. But if you’re good enough to play D-1A (FBS) football, it shouldn’t matter what conference you play in. Every conference has weak schools, the Pac-10 for example has Washington State who could only beat a D-1AA (FCS) school and barely won! I attached a link to the conference standings of D-1A (FBS) schools to just give you an idea on schools. It also depends on where you live and where you want to go to school. If academics don’t really matter than the school probably won’t matter. To comment on some other answers, though those conferences are Division 1, they are Division-1AA (FCS), not Division-1A (FBS
