If Kakiseni chose the judges, isnt this cronyism, and doesnt it affect the final results?
If Malaysia had organisations which represented all artists, such as the League of American Theatres and Producers, The Dramatists Guild, the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers, our job would be much simpler. As it is, Malaysian artists do not have representative bodies, so there is no other solution than to invite people who we think are representative to be judges. After all, it makes sense to get practitioner known for their craft to be judge of what is best in their industry. We also include critics, academics and well-informed enthusiasts to provide a balance and prevent insularity. The final panel were selected after consulting with many different people: practitioners, academics, government representatives, writers and reviewers. We try to be as inclusive as possible. We are also open to suggestions. Click here for more on eligibility rules, judging criteria or just general information about the awards.
