If the technical challenges are being met, what are the most significant barriers that remain for the Biomass Project?
The Biomass Projects long-term goal is that switchgrass and other grasses become commercially viable sources of renewable fuel to cofire with coal to generate electricity. Project partners are working to address issues that will help support the commercial use of biomass as a renewable fuel. These issues and related project activities include: Cost of Biomass: Switchgrass and other grasses grown for use as fuel currently cost more than other sources of energy such as coal or wind. Project activities have focused on increasing biomass yields and decreasing costs of production and processing. Project efforts are also directed toward developing markets that offer a premium for electricity generated from biomass, tax credits for the use of biomass as a fuel, and opportunities for landowners to produce biomass on land enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). Ash Marketability: The ash generated during biomass cofiring currently does not meet specifications for use as an additive
