Im Terrible at Math, But An Excellent Science Student, Can I Still become a Doctor?

I know exactly how you feel. I am studying in college right now for my undergraduate before I go into med school and I have always kicked but in science ( tons of awards) but I just can’t get math down. No matter how hard I tried I just kept screwing it up. I just got a tutor to help me get at least a C in the classes I had so that they at least count as credits. Yes you can be a doctor but it will be harder for you in college becuase in order to get into med school you will more than likely need to take algebra I, a class on functions, statistics or biostatistics, physics (heavy math science), and of course the dreaded calculus. Hey if this is what you really want to do then I am sure you will get through it. Good Luck!

I have the same problem. I’m great in bio yet horrible in maths. I’d say to look into the schools you’re thinking of attending and see what they require. You may need 90 credits to enter, but they might only look at the marks for the most recent two thirds of those courses. Thus, you can take all the math prerequisites that you need earlier on in college. If it’s your passion then by all means follow it. Your choices are certainly not limited by this – unless you believe they are. Also, given two people with equal GPA’s they would take the more well rounded person. Concentrate on joining clubs, volunteering, or something that will set you apart and give you the upper edge.

Much of the required math is applied, such as in physics. You should get tutoring NOW and get those grades up. You can certainly go on to medical school after your undergraduate program, if you keep your grades up, as long as you can pass the MCAT. Focus on getting into a good UG science program for now.

Yes, you can be bad in maths and still be in health care. I am a very slow person when it comes to math (especially trignonometry and calculus). I have a bachelors of science degree in Nursing and Master’s degree in Forensic Science. I know many doctors who can’t spell, let alone calculate and they do just fine. You need much higher math skills in engineering or statistics. Personally, the only math I use regularly in my job is converting from U.S. weights and measures to the metric standard. You don’t need extensive knowledge to do that.
