In Indias nuclear power programme, to what type of accident, emergency preparedness contingency plans have been drawn up?
Consequent to Chernobyl accident and as a matter of abundant precaution, off-site emergency preparedness plans are also worked out for an area of upto 16 kms radius to meet the remotest and most unlikely event of an accident beyond the design basis one. An emergency exercises are conducted regularly in all operating stations. The emergency preparedness include provision and transport for evacuations, shelters for the people evacuated to safe locations, provision for food etc. These exercises also enable us to know the time required for these activities and also any other shortfalls for improvement. Issue of State Government approved emergency preparedness plan and a satisfactory exercise has been made mandatory by AERB for issue of operating license.
