In laymans terms, what is the anthropic principle?

The anthropic principle says that part of the reason we see the universe to be the way it is, is because we are here to see it. There are many parameters to the universe which seem to have been fine-tuned to allow us to exist. These are a few dimensionless numbers which govern the universe, which we currently only have hazy ideas for why they have the values they do. (such as the ratio of the masses of the proton and the electron). There are some scientific explanations about how a fine-tuning for intelligent observers can occur: Perhaps there are or have been many universes and we just happen to be in this one because it is one that supports intelligent observers. There are some scientists who believe the fine tuning is an illusion, caused by us happening to be here now, or that other values of the parameters could give rise to different kinds of intelligent observers. It could even be that there is a more logical explanation for the values the physical constants that we have not yet
