In some fics the Cats have to touch their cat comms to communicate, in others they don – whats the deal?
The cat comm is a piece of equipment that focuses and broadcasts spoken or telepathic messages. All the Cats channel their magick (often called ki) through a common “reservoir” of energy -as a nifty side effect, all Cats are able to telepathically communicate with each other. This is done by sending a packet of neutral ki to the intended recipient and piggybacking a message along with the energy. However, this process gets much harder as the number of recipients of the message increases – especially if the recipients are far apart or beyond the sender’s field of vision. It also gets harder if the Cats are in the middle of a battle, where ki and other magickal energies are already being sent around like crazy. It is usually in those times that the cat comm will be touched, in order to send the message out to “everyone in general”. That’s just the tip of the iceburg, but we hope this simple explanation helps a bit.
