Standards 1-5 are focused on aspects of classroom teaching. Standard 6 focuses on professional practice beyond the classroom. Each standards has five or six sub-categories called “Elements”. In the STARSS process, the administrator selects ONE ELEMENT, and each teacher selects ONE ELEMENT as the focus for the classroom observations. This focus encourages more detailed and objective observation feedback, which promotes teacher reflection and performance improvement over time. The administrator also evaluates all six Elements of Standard 6: Developing As A Professional Educator in the Summary Evaluation at the end of the year.
