I read in the Bible that last names were not used in Jesus time. Back then, it was explained who you were. If your name was John. You would be identified by who your father was. Example: John son of James. You were different from any other John because you were the son of James. What year did last names started being used?

After 1066, the Norman barons introduced surnames into England, and the practice gradually spread. Initially, the identifying names were changed or dropped at will, but eventually theybegan to stick and to get passed on.
