On a per-encounter basis, fees paid for interpreting services do appear to be cost prohibitive. However, when analyzed over the course of a fiscal year, the fee typically equates to a reasonable overhead expense and should be budgeted as an annual accessibility service. All certified interpreters complete years of post-secondary training and state or national certification testing to obtain licensure required to become interpreters. Additionally, certified interpreters are required to continually develop and enhance their knowledge and skills by way of annual continuing education. In short, interpreting is a professional service.
