If you are not fit for work then yes you need to keep your boss informed. In order to return to work when you are sick, you need a certificate from your doctor over-riding your initial sick certificate saying you are now fit for work. If not and anything were to happen to you as a result of coming to work too early, then your place of work will not cover this “accident” or “illness” with your social security stamps. On top of this your bosses could be sued by you in the eventuality that you came to work and were still ill and subsequently got worse. So for their sakes as much as your clean bill of health you need to stay off work until absolutely clear.

You should try your best to keep him informed on how you are, but pneumonia isn’t contagious so if you can work, you should, but you should just take it easy for now.

Yes, when ever you take time off work for illness or a sick period, you have to notify your employer, that’s if you want to keep your job and get paid!

That doesn’t sound right to me. Rule of thumb is that after 24 hours of antibiotics, you are considered non contagious. Assuming your pneumonia was bacterial.
