Is a 10-gallon aquarium suitable for rats?

Not generally. A 10-gallon is really only big enough for one rat, and not even that unless the rat has plenty of time outside the aquarium daily. 10-gallons, however, are very cheap because they are mass-produced and can be used for quarantine or a nursery. (Be sure to buy or make a wire or mesh lid! Hoods provide no or inadequate ventilation!) You can use a 10-gallon aquarium as a starting point for a suitable cage. By building wire cage levels onto the top of the aquarium, you can nearly double the space with just one level, which would then make the cage livable for a rat or two. You could also create a lid with a ferret tube or other connector to join two aquariums (or two modified cage/aquariums) or more. Because 10-gallons are widely available and cheap ($8-$10), this is generally less expensive than buying a larger aquarium or cage. You can create very elaborate cages, with all sorts of tanks and tunnels, resembling a giant version of one of those novelty hamster cages. Your rat
