Canadian citizens do not need to carry a passport, but it will make your life so much easier in terms of entry/exit. If you choose not to bring a passport, you will need proof of citizenship ( ie landed immigrant card or OFFICIAL government issued birth certificate as well as a government issued photo ID (like a drivers license). Some other notes: you need to pay for an entry visa as well as an exit tax. The entry visa of $10 US is usually included in any package you buy. You will have to pay the $20 US departure tax at the airport when you leave and it is US CASH ONLY. They will not accept Canadian $, Dominican currency or Credit Cards. Excerpt taken from Canadian government web site: Entry and Exit Requirements – For Canadian and U.S. citizens, a valid passport, or a birth certificate, Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of Citizenship, along with photo identification, are required for both entry and exit. All tourists must purchase a visa/tourist card at a cost of $10.00 U.
