Is a granite headstone porous/likely to absorb water?

Yes, granite can take in liquids, e.g. water, wine and so on. Depending on the kind of liquid the material is prone to a permanent change of color. Polished granite does the same, only that the surface area is smaller and the liquids can be cleaned away easier. Rough surfaces always are prone to take in sand, moss, bird poop and so on. This has nothing to do with granite, though, but is generally true to rough surfaces. Personally, I like granite a lot and can recommend it for headstones. Most stains will go and if you do not select a particular “even-colored” stone, no-one will notice slight variations in color due to age and contamination. It’s a stone, not a glass statue, isn’t it?
