Is a homeowner responsible for inspecting his/her chimney?
A. Yes. The Ontario Fire Code states that the owner is responsible for compliance. Article 2.6.1.2. Chimney and chimney liners that constitute a fire hazard shall be repaired or replaced in accordance with the Building Code. Article 2.6.1.5. Chimney, flues and flue pipes shall be inspected annually and cleaned as often as necessary to keep them free from accumulations of combustible deposits. Article 2.6.1.7. Chimneys, flue pipes and breeching shall be maintained in a safe condition.
