Is a Lyric coloratura the same as a Soubrette Coloratura?
A soubrette is classified as a bright voice in the mid-range. It’s a light vocal weight, so younger people whose voices haven’t yet fully matured are often classified as a soubrette soprano. Soubrette singers, though, are not generally classified as “coloratura”. Their voices are not yet mature enough to sing as quickly and with as much range as a true coloratura singer. Lyric sopranos, on the other hand, have richer voices, bigger range, and more breath control. Lyric coloraturas have breath control, and are able to make major jumps over the scale, seeing as coloraturas are the “acrobats of the singing world”. So, in basic terms, a Lyric singer can be cast in a role that is played by a Soubrette singer, but they are not the same voice classification.
