Is an annulment really just a Catholic divorce?
No. As noted above, an annulment does not dissolve something that existed, but instead recognizes what was missing all along. Divorce also focuses on the events that eventually broke down the parties’ relationship, while the annulment process concentrates on the formation of the relationship and the decision to get married in the first place.
