Is an eating disorder along the same lines as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder?
Those with eating disorders definitely exhibit obsessive-compulsive behavior. However, OCD is seen as an anxiety disorder. Similar symptoms may present, but the difference between the two is the cause and treatment of each disorder. There is growing evidence that biological factors are a primary contributor to OCD. Studies have been done that show OCD patients have patterns of brain activity that differ from those of people without mental illness or with some other mental illness. People with OCD also respond well to medications that effect neurotransmitters in the brain. Eating disorders on the other hand, are largely believed to be caused by demands from society, friends, and families. Dysfunction within the family is also seen as a strong contributor. To a lesser extent, there may be some genetic component to eating disorders. However, psychotherapy is the only course of treatment that has been proven effective in those with eating disorders.
